Title: AI Coding: A Practical Approach for Scientists to Take Control Back and Build Their Own Data Science Applications
Abstract: With the advent of consumer-facing Large Language Model applications (think ChatGPT and Claude), individuals now have cost-effective access to powerful thinking and processing tools. No need to be an expert in software coding or web scraping or IT, these apps have deep “world knowledge” that you can tap through simple conversation.
In this discussion, we walk through how to leverage the Claude.ai web app (specifically, the Opus model) to build data science applications. We cover key principles and steps in building these apps – including how to get the best out of the Opus model and avoid common pitfalls. To ground the discussion, we cover a real example of how the Compound Insights app has been built ([https://www.compoundinsights.dev/ ](https://www.compoundinsights.dev/)) using these principles.
